There is no safe rule that converts every Nigerian GPA by dividing a 5-point value and multiplying by four. Universities and cohorts can use different grading systems.
A dated institutional counterexample
The University of Ibadan's grading-system notice adopted a 4-point system for the 2016/2017 intake while retaining older rules for earlier cohorts. Its notice includes named percentage bands, course-unit weighting, and degree classifications.
This one official example is enough to disprove a timeless “Nigeria equals one 5.0 system” assumption. It is not a national conversion table.

Degree class is not U.S. GPA
A degree classification describes the result under the issuing university's rules. It does not have an automatic U.S. 4.0 equivalent. Likewise, a Nigerian percentage should not be relabeled as a U.S. letter grade from an unrelated school.
Claims about nationwide grade deflation, rare grades, or strict professors require a defined dataset. They should not be inferred from scale labels.
Use the recipient's evaluation rule
A receiving institution decides whether it accepts the original GPA, calculates internally, or requests an evaluator. NACES itself does not evaluate credentials; applicants contact a member organization when a recipient accepts that route. If the issuer uses credit-unit weighting, reproduce its own documented points:
