How cumulative GPA works across semesters
Cumulative GPA combines every GPA-bearing course included by your school. Because it is weighted by credits, you should not simply average two semester GPAs unless both semesters contain exactly the same number of credits.
Enter each term separately to see both the semester result and the combined total. This makes it easier to identify which term changed your academic average and how many future credits can still move it.

GPA formula
Cumulative GPA = total quality points from all terms ÷ total GPA credits from all terms
If you only know a prior GPA, prior quality points can be estimated as prior GPA × prior GPA credits, then combined with the new term.
Cumulative GPA example
A student begins with a 3.20 GPA across 45 credits and earns a 3.80 across 15 new credits:

The updated cumulative GPA is 201 quality points ÷ 60 credits = 3.35, not the simple average of 3.20 and 3.80.

Rules that can change a cumulative GPA
- Grade replacement policies may remove or partially retain the quality points from an earlier attempt.
- Transfer credits often count toward degree progress without affecting the receiving school’s GPA.
- Cumulative institutional GPA, major GPA, and overall GPA can include different groups of courses.
Frequently asked questions
Can I average my semester GPAs?
Only when the semesters contain the same number of GPA credits. The accurate method combines quality points and credits from every term.
How quickly can a cumulative GPA change?
The more credits already completed, the more slowly it moves. A new 15-credit semester has a much larger effect after 15 completed credits than after 90.
Do repeated classes count twice?
That depends on the school. Some replace the first grade, some average all attempts, and others keep both attempts with special transcript notation.
Do transfer credits affect cumulative GPA?
Policies vary. Many institutions accept the credits but exclude the original grades from the institutional GPA, while centralized applications may recalculate all coursework.
